Accommodation: Udzungwa Falls

The most popular trail in Udzungwa is Sanje Waterfall. This 180m waterfall is very impressive, surrounded by rainforest with excellent views over the Kilombero floodplain. At the top, you can swim in the refreshing plunge pool of the top waterfall (around 40m high) surrounded by thick rainforest. Optionally, you can take a 20min detour from the path, either on the way up, or on the way down the path from the Old Sanje Hotel, to the bottom of the large waterfall for fantastic views looking up, and more swimming/jumping/diving in the pool (a bit warmer). Sanje can be walked at any time of day, but it is best in the morning with the sun on the waterfalls, and is very hot at midday. At the right time of year, the sides of the gorge are covered in fireball lilies. It is common to see both types of Colobus on this trail. Many people walk up and down on the Old Sanje Hotel trail, but there is an alternative route up or down starting at the ranger post to the south. This route is slightly longer and is less used, so provides better chances of seeing undisturbed monkeys, and of course a circular walk. If you are using Hondo Hondo transport, you can be dropped off at one place and picked up from the other.

Remote and initially inaccessible, it was established in 1951, but never attracted the financial support provided for the better known wildlife strongholds such as the Ngorongoro Conservation Area and the Serengeti National Parks. Only since 1989, when the Tanzanian Government re-examined the reserve’s status and designated it a National Priority Project, has its true significance and importance been recognized.

A tour to Materuni Village and Waterfalls is a great way to spend a day away from the bustle of town life. The walk to Materuni Waterfall offers a glimpse into the nature of Tanzania allowing you either to prepare your body for the forthcoming climb to Kilimanjaro or ease your muscles after the climb. The Materuni Waterfall tour starts with a walk through the area adjacent to the waterfall, rich in beautiful natural scenery of Tanzania. It is an opportunity to see how local fruit like avocados, mangos, lemons, and bananas grow, as well as learn some of the local history, traditions, village economy, agricultural and cultural life. When you get to the waterfall, you can refresh yourself in the natural pool, so swimsuits will come in handy! The tour will continue with a visit to the local village lying in the coffee plantations. The villagers will demonstrate the process of coffee farming and guide you through the preparation of coffee from a bean to a cup. Sing and dance along with the Chaga people as they are grinding, roasting and boiling the beans. When the coffee is ready, villagers will serve lunch - a national Chagga meal.

After breakfast at Materuni, we will drive straight to Materuni Waterfalls. A private concession of about 600 square km, bordering Kenya at Amboseli National Park, offers spectacular landscapes with magnificent views of Mount Kilimanjaro, Mount Meru, Ol Doinyo Longido, and Ol Doinyo Orok, unique nature and cultural experience. Maasai “bomas” are sparsely scattered in Sinya, with a total population of no more than 2.000 people living in a huge area. These Maasai are still living the traditional way and are not used to the commercial relationship with tourists which is common in more visited areas. They are spectacularly dressed and follow all the traditional ceremonies. This is a Community Conservation Project benefiting the Maasai of Sinya. Activities include game drives, walking safaris escorted by Maasai warriors, interaction with the local Maasai including participation in ceremonies if available.
